STIHL chainsaw troubleshooting guide Do-It-Yourself

When your Stihl chainsaw starts, you likely have one of some problems:Engine does not start easily, stalls at idle speed, but operates normally at full throttle,Engine does not deliver full power or runs erratically,Spark plug terminal firmly seated on spark plug.Starter rope broken or Engine will not idle, idle speed too high, if you have these problems, troubleshooting guide below may help you.

STIHL chainsaw Engine troubleshooting guide

Engine does not start easily, stalls at idle speed, but operates normally at full throttle
There are four possible Cause:

Cause 1.  Oil seals in crankcase leaking.The remedy is Replace oil seals.

Cause 2.  Spacer flange leaking.The remedy is Seal or replace spacer flange.

Cause 3.  Cylinder base gasket leaking.The remedy is Replace gasket.

Cause 4.  Crankcase damaged (cracks).The Replace crankcase.

Engine does not deliver full power or runs erratically

There are three possible Cause:

Cause 1.  Secondary air seepagethrough poorly mounted or faulty spacerflange or gaskets.The remedy is Mount spacer flange correctly or replace, or replace gaskets.

Cause 2.  Piston rings leaking or broken.The remedy is Fit new piston rings.

Cause 3.  Muffler carbonized.The remedy is Clean muffler (inlet and exhaust).

Engine overheating

The possible Cause is that Insufficient cylinder cooling. Air inlets in fan housing blocked or cooling fins on cylinder very dirty.The remedy is Thoroughly clean all cooling air openings.

Starter rope broken

The possible Cause is that Rope pulled out too vigorously as far as stop or over edge – i.e. not vertically or Normal wear.The remedy is Fit new starter rope.

Rewind spring broken

There are two possible Cause:

Cause 1.  Spring overtensioned – no reserve when rope is fully extended.The remedy is Fit new rewind spring.

Cause 2.  Very dirty or corroded.The remedy is Fit new rewind spring.

Starter rope can be pulled out almost without resistance (crankshaft does not turn)

There are two possible Cause:

Cause 1.  Guide peg on pawl or pawl itself is worn.The remedy is Fit new pawl.

Cause 2.  Spring clip fatigued.The remedy is Fit new spring clip.

Starter rope is difficult to pull and rewinds very slowly

There are two possible Cause:

Cause 1.  Starter mechanism is very dirty (dusty conditions).The remedy is Thoroughly clean complete starter mechanism.

Cause 2.  Lubricating oil on rewind spring becomes viscous at very low outside temperatures (spring windings stick together).The remedy is Apply a few drops of kerosine (paraffin) to spring, then pull rope carefully several times until normal action is restored.

Carburetor floods; engine stalls

There are five possible Cause:

Cause 1.  Inlet needle not sealing. Foreign matter in valve seat or cone damaged.The remedy is Remove and clean or replace inlet needle, clean fuel tank, pickup body and fuel line if necessary

Cause 2.  Inlet control lever sticking on spindle.The remedy is Free off inlet control lever.

Cause 3.  Helical spring not located on nipple of inlet control lever.The remedy is Remove inlet control lever and refit correctly

Cause 4.  Perforated disc on diaphragm is deformed and presses constantly against inlet control lever.The remedy is Fit new metering diaphragm.

Cause 5. Inlet control lever is too high (relative to design position),The remedy is Set inlet control lever flush with top of metering chamber face.

Poor acceleration

There are Seven possible Cause:

Cause 1. Idle jet “too lean”.The remedy is Back off low speed adjusting screw slightly (see carburetor adjustment).

Cause 2. Main jet “too lean”.The remedy is Back off low speed adjusting screw slightly (see carburetor adjustment).

Cause 3. Inlet control lever is too low (relative to design position).The remedy is Set inlet control lever flush with top of metering chamber face.

Cause 4. Inlet needle sticking to valve seat.The remedy is Remove inlet needle, clean and refit.

Cause 5. Connecting bore to atmosphere blocked.The remedy is Clean bore.

Cause 6. Diaphragm gasket leaking.The remedy is Fit new diaphragm gasket.

Cause 7. Metering diaphragm damaged or shrunk.The remedy is Fit new metering diaphragm.
